THE NEXT MORNING DAWNED HAZY AND DANK. THE air was heavy with steam rising off the concrete sprawl of the Strip and its surroundings. Kendra stood just outside the hotel, already marinating in the stifling air. She swatted at a bead of sweat trickling down the nape of her neck, gritting her teeth. It’s already above ninety and it’s barely 9 a.m., she mused.
The night before, almost as soon as Mitch had left the room, Kendra erupted into a fit of tears and moans, doubling over on the mattress and sobbing like a heartbroken middle schooler. The wave of emotion had shocked her. And while crying felt good and helped her fall asleep just minutes later, she could not make heads or tails of what she was feeling. Was it the stress of the Mustang? Was she missing her family? Was she just now experiencing the sadness of being rejected by Adam Green? Was she afraid? Did she hate Mitch? Even now, hours later, she wasn’t sure what had come over her.
But one thing was for sure: thanks to the exhaustion of the day, she had slept like a log. When the glare of the desert sun woke her up just after seven, she saw Mitch asleep in his bed and had no idea when he’d come in.
Standing, looking at the hotel parking lot, Kendra was grateful for the fact that she had a task to accomplish, something to set her mind apart from worrying that her friendship with Mitch might be falling apart. They had never gotten in a fight. Ever. And all it had taken was one day on the road for tempers to rise. Was this the beginning of the end for them?
Immediately after getting up, Kendra had begun researching local towing companies, to finally put the issue of the dead Mustang to rest. It wouldn’t be complicated. All she needed to do was get towed to the nearest gas station, where she could fill up and be on her way.
What sounded like a simple plan was complicated by only one thing: this was going to cost a lot. And Kendra knew she couldn’t go to a local ATM or use her credit card to pay for the tow truck. She also knew she couldn’t call her parents to use their AAA account, which would either decrease the cost or erase the cost entirely.
So she had called a few places, hoping to find an affordable place that also seemed like it was run by people who wouldn’t steal the classic car and ride off into the desert with it. The company she had gone with, Lamar & Sons, was her last, best hope.
But they were late.
Kendra paced nervously in front of the entrance doors to the hotel. She had called the business a few times asking for an updated time of arrival, but they had said the same thing every time: “He’s on his way, miss. Not to worry.”
Kendra had never been comforted by someone telling her “not to worry.
